Pepperilly, Purple Patch (2010)

Geographe, Western Australia
Sample, 14.5%, screwcap, RRP $18

The bouquet tantilised with notes of mulberry, leather, licorice and hints of chocolate. The palate was brimming with powerful fruit, showing characters of blackberry, stewed plums and tar. A blend of Grenache (65%), Mourvedre (20%) and Shiraz (15%), the depth and intensity of the fruit was impressive. Supported by medium-strong acidity and soft but ripe tannins, with the oak barely discernable, this wine showed stunning balance. Great value - 94.

  1. Thanks for the recommendation - I have personally never tried anything with Mourvedre in it, and this could be a good start. Do you have any other recommendations of wines featuring this grape?

  2. Hi Matthew

My apology for the delayed reply. You may have unknowingly consumed Mourvedre, which is also commonly referred to as 'Mataro' in Australia. This wine is definitely a good start.

Mourvedre is most commonly used as a component in blends, which traditionally in the Rhone, have revolved around a blend of Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre. I have reviewed a few other good GSM blends over the years (which you will easily be able to locate by using the search widget and the term 'Grenache').

Straight Mourvedre wines are less common, but there are a couple that are well known and I would easily recommend. Try to get your hands on Turkey Flat's Mourvedre. If money is on your side, then try Hewitson's Mourvedre.

    Cheers
    David

  3. The key to enjoying different types of Merlot is doing some research, asking questions, reading ratings, doing a little taste testing before buying and being open to new experiences. Even if you have always enjoyed a wine from a certain region and tend to always buy wines from there, an occasional foray into another part of the same country or even into another country altogether will liven up your Merlot drinking. So go for it next time you are looking for a new wine and see how many continents you can enjoy.
